A joke taken too far

There is something strange and somewhat disturbing about the Indian government’s vision on how the country should be perceived and experienced. It’s for the future, it’s for the children, they argue. And how can one object? It’s the oldest trick in the book, the children. Unquestionably India’s got a major problem with smoking; people are dying by the thousands, every day. What’s the government’s solution? A ban making illegal to smoke in public (not smoking in general just in public) followed up by banning the portrayal of smoking in movies and television (old and new; foreign and domestic). Rather than going after the producers and distributors or any of those guys, they target the smokers and censoring of the arts. What’s a little bit of censorship after all? Perception, image, surface – that’s what counts!

Stupidity rules the policy makers, ok?
